To: The Editor of the German, Focus Magazine:
I am writing to express my revulsion about your article in Focus Magazine, on 22 February 2010.[ http://www.focus.de/magazin/archiv/jahrgang_2010/asgabe_o8/ ): Shame on you! I find this disgusting and insulting, with a banal depiction of the venerated statue of the Classical period, Venus (the goddess of love)of c200 B.C. [also known as “Aphrodite of Melos”] and by adding insult to injury, with the Greek Flag around it.
AND YOU AS THE EDITOR APPROVED IT? WHO ARE YOU? WHERE DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL? HOW DARE YOU DO SOMETHING SO INSULTING TO THE ENTIRE HUMANITY and specifically, to the people of Greece and to the five million Hellenic Diaspora in five Continents?
REMEDY: I ASK THAT YOU PUBLISH A RETRACTION AND AN APOLOGY IMMEDIATELY, TO YOUR READERS AND TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF GREECE, HIS EXCELLENCY, MR. KAROLOS PAPOULIAS; TO THE PRIME MINISTER, MR. GEORGE PAPANDREOU; TO THE GREEK MINISTER OF CULTURE, MR. PAVLOS GEROULANOS AND TO THE GREEK AMBASSADOR IN BERLIN.
Please note that, I intend to write to all German and EU Officials protesting this atrocity. And you cannot get away with it by saying that “Western Humor and freedom of speech remains a thorn issue for inter state tensions”. THAT IS DEFINITELY NOT HUMOR AND HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH FREEDOM OF SPEECH, EITHER. There are certain things in life you never do.
Example: You can never, ever, go to a funeral and say: Congratulations to the Wife of the dead husband, even if he was the scum of the earth.
THUS, WHAT YOU DID IS PURE SLANDER AND OF THE WORST KIND. Nothing else will do but an immediate retraction and apology, as above. Thank you.

ΔΕΛΤΙΟ ΤΥΠΟΥ
ΑΝΑΚΟΙΝΩΣΗ ΠΡΟΕΔΡΟΥ ΣΑΕ ΓΙΑ ΤΑ ΔΗΜΟΣΙΕΥΜΑ ΓΕΡΜΑΝΙΚΩΝ ΜΜΕ ΣΕ ΒΑΡΟΣ ΤΗΣ ΕΛΛΑΔΑΣ
Ο Πρόεδρος του Συμβουλίου Απόδημου Ελληνισμού (ΣΑΕ), κ. Στέφανος Π. Ταμβάκης εξέδωσε την ακόλουθη ανακοίνωση, με αφορμή τα αήθη, συκοφαντικά και χυδαία δημοσιεύματα γερμανικών ΜΜΕ σε βάρος της Ελλάδας:
«Το τελευταίο διάστημα είμαστε μάρτυρες μιας πρωτοφανούς, ενορχηστρωμένης θα λέγαμε, επίθεσης εναντίων της Ελλάδας από μερίδα μεγάλων ΜΜΕ της Γερμανίας, που στόχο έχουν να πλήξουν το κύρος της πατρίδας σε μία δύσκολη, για τα οικονομικά, περίοδο. Δημοσιεύματα, που στόχο έχουν την παραπλάνηση των αναγνωστικού κοινού, μέσα από ψευδή πληροφορίες και χαρακτηρισμούς που δεν συνάδουν με το πνεύμα της μεγάλης ευρωπαϊκής οικογένειας.
Εκ΄ μέρους όλων των Μελών του Προεδρείου του ΣΑΕ, διερμηνεύοντας τα συναισθήματα των εκατομμυρίων ελλήνων ομογενών ανά τον κόσμο, εκφράζω την εντονότατη δυσαρέσκειά μας για τα αήθη, συκοφαντικά και χυδαία δημοσιεύματα γερμανικών ΜΜΕ, σε βάρος της Ελλάδας.
Το γεγονός ότι ο ελληνικός λαός βρίσκεται αυτή την ώρα αντιμέτωπος με μία οικονομική κρίση, που σίγουρα δεν ξεκίνησε από την Ελλάδα, δεν επιτρέπει σε κανέναν να τον λοιδορεί. Όπως επανειλημμένα έχει δηλώσει ο Πρωθυπουργός, κ. Γιώργος Παπανδρέου, το μόνο που ζητάει η Ελλάδα είναι πολιτική στήριξη και αλληλεγγύη εκ΄ μέρους των εταίρων. Και σε αυτή τη δύσκολη πορεία έχει συμπαραστάτες όλους εμάς, που ζούμε διάσπαρτοι στις πέντε ηπείρους, φέροντας με υπερηφάνεια το όνομα το ελληνικό.
Ας μην ξεχνάμε ότι μετά από μία μεγάλη μπόρα έρχεται η νηνεμία. Και η Ελλάδα ξέρει από μπόρες, έχει περάσει πολλές στη χιλιόχρονη ιστορία της, και κατάφερε να σταθεί στα πόδια της. Στη σύγχρονη ιστορία πέρασε την πιο σκληρή κατοχή κατά τον δεύτερο παγκόσμιο πόλεμο, με όλα τα ολέθρια επακόλουθα. Ανόρθωσε το ανάστημα της και θυσίασε χιλιάδες νεκρούς στο βωμό της Ελευθερίας. Οι μνήμες είναι ακόμα νωπές σε μαρτυρικά χωριά-ολοκαυτώματα της ναζιστικής θηριωδίας στην πατρίδα μας.
Η ιστορία δεν παραγράφεται. Το μεγαλείο της ελληνικής ψυχής είναι ότι μπορεί να συγχωρεί και να τείνει χέρι συνεργασίας για ένα καλύτερο αύριο για όλο τον κόσμο».

Sehr geehrte Redaktion des Focus-Magazins,
Aufgrund Ihrer letzen Ausgabe (Nr. 8 vom 22. Februar 2010: Betrüger in der Euro-Familie) sollten Sie sowie Ihr „hochangesehener“ Arbeitgeber sich schämen. Warum?
1. Weil Sie der Öffentlichkeit manipulierend und trügerisch nicht die vollkommene Wahrheit mitteilen. Natürlich sind die griechischen Politiker sowie Vertreter der Wirtschaft der letzten Jahre nicht fehlerlos bzw. frei von Schuld. Genauso hat sich aber die deutsche bzw. die europäische und U.S.-Politik (unter anderem) hinsichtlich der Wirtschaftskrise und ihrer Auswirkungen nicht tadellos verhalten. Solche irreführenden Veröffentlichungen dienen grundsätzlich der spekulativen Wirtschaftsmafia, die wahrscheinlich durch Verleumdung Griechenlands ihre intransparenten wirtschaftspolitischen Interessen vorantreiben will. Letztlich ist der wirtschaftliche Zustand vieler anderer Länder in der EU nicht besser als der Griechenlands. Die deutschen Banken (und nicht nur sie) profitieren allerdings von einem solchen Angriff, weil sie durch solche manipulierende Darstellungen durch die deutsche Presse günstigere Konditionen aushandeln können, um von Griechenland höhere Zinsen zu verlangen (z.B. durch die wirtschaftliche Abstufung des Landes).
2. Weil Sie willkürlich, unbegründet, unobjektiv, vereinfacht und oberflächlich das ganze griechische Volk, welches Sie als „Betrüger in der europäischen Familie“ bezeichnen, mit den korrupten Kreisen der wirklich Verantwortlichen für die Wirtschaftskrise in Griechenland oder in anderen Ländern gleichsetzen. Darüber hinaus kultivieren Sie damit den Hass der Deutschen gegen ein EU-Bruderland. Obwohl Griechenland unter dem deutschen Faschismus sehr gelitten hat (mehr als 600.000 Todesopfer), und bisher kaum Entschädigungen von Deutschland bekommen hat, verhalten sich die Griechen gegenüber den Deutschen sowie ihrer Kultur sehr freundlich.
Wenn Sie konkrete Angaben gegen die Verantwortlichen (Personen oder Stiftungen) der Krise in Griechenland hätten, wären Sie in der Lage, die Öffentlichkeit darüber zu informieren und hätten es nicht nötig, unbestimmt ein ganzes Volk, ein ganzes Land, sowie seiner Kultur zu verleumden, zu verspotten und zu beleidigen. Es sieht so aus, dass Sie nach einem Sündenbock suchen. Dies sollte aber jedenfalls nicht das gesamte griechische Volk sowie die alt -und neugriechische Kultur sein!
3. Weil Sie schon durch das Titelblatt, welches Sie gewählt haben, das Ethos, die Kultur, die Sitten und Gebräuche des Griechentums bzw. des Hellenismus verspotten. Ohne die geringste Ahnung von der griechischen bzw. der Welt-Geschichte zu haben, „informieren“ Sie das Publikum in Ihrem manipulierenden Heft über die „2.000 Jahre Verfall“ Griechenlands (S.132 ff.).
Sie vergessen aber einige kleine Einzelheiten. Z.B.:
a) Den Beitrag des Griechentums zur Entwicklung und Verbreitung der Künste (z.B. Architektur, Malerei, Musik, Literatur u.a) und der Wissenschaften (Theologie, Recht, Medizin, Astronomie, Mathematik, Mechanik, Geographie, Politik- und Sozialwissenschaften, Pädagogik, Geschichte u.a.), nicht nur im Altertum, sondern auch während der von Ihnen als verfallend erwähnten vergangenen 2000 Jahre, sowohl während des Oströmischen Reiches bis zum Fall von Konstantinopel (1453), als auch nachher (vor allem durch die griechische Diaspora in Europa und später in Amerika, Australien, Afrika u.a.).
b) Den 2000-jährigen Beitrag Griechenlands zu der friedlichen Verbreitung des Christentums (v.a. durch das Oströmische Reich von Konstantinopel bis heute).
c) Den wesentlichen Beitrag des Griechentums zur Bekämpfung des Imperialismus im 1. Weltkrieg sowie zur Bekämpfung des Faschismus während des 2. Weltkriegs. Sie berücksichtigen kaum den beispielhaften Widerstand der Griechen gegen die Diktatur und für die Demokratie (1967-1974).
d) Den kulturellen bzw. politischen sowie wirtschaftlichen Beitrag des zeitgenössischen Griechenlands zur Stabilisation bzw. zum Frieden insbesondere auf der Balkan-Halbinsel und im Nahen und Mittleren Osten, auch zugunsten der EU. Denn Griechenland ist noch immer ein Hauptfaktor der Stabilisation auf dem Balkan sowie im Mittelmeerraum, trotz dauerhafter Provokationen von verschiedenen Seiten.
Aus allen diesen Gründen ist das griechische Volk schockiert: weniger also wegen der von Ihnen dargestellten aktuellen Wirtschaftskrise, sondern wegen der Unverschämtheit, mit der aus macht- und wirtschaftspolitischen Interessen dieses Land in verleumderischer Art und Weise angegriffen wird.
Mit dieser manipulativen Veröffentlichung haben Sie der öffentlichen Meinung Ihr wahres Gesicht gezeigt. Wir sind zumindest dafür dankbar!
Es gibt Grenzen, auch in der Pressefreiheit. Sie sollten sich entschuldigen und diese Diffamierungen in einer Gegendarstellung zurücknehmen, ansonsten riskieren Sie angeklagt zu werden.

Focus reversed
Despite an abundance of positive geo-economic and social dynamics, Greece did manage to produce a huge fiscal deficit after the last 35 years of its latest republic. Ironic but totally true, it’s an epic failure of democratic institutions by a self catastrophic people, as it proves so, within the historic birthplace of democracy.
For the last few months, the world media have been giving the Greek crisis an accurate coverage, albeit a selectively focused one; but that’s a habit of the mass media in general rather than any special treatment for Greece. Focusing on a fallen economy is as easy as shooting a sitting duck.
In its 22nd February 2010 edition, German magazine FOCUS hosted an article about the Greek crisis and the German concerns regarding a potential bailout of the also troubled and so called PIGS. The magazine’s front cover was depicting a photoshoped statue of Aphrodite of Milos gesticulating an insult to the Eurofamily (well, citing the word “family” while referring to the EU and even more so to the eurozone currency, is just an oxymoron, if not the understanding of a moron).
No matter how accurate and/or fair one-sided views are, they rarely illuminate the bigger picture.
Due to its relatively small size and geopolitical location, Greece has been given the special blessing of living under a permanent Turkish military threat manifested with daily violations of Greek airspace by fighter jets and by disputes over Greek sovereignty rights on certain islands and areas in the Aegean sea. Consequently, Greece is forced to spend huge amounts on defence budgets reaching 4.30 % of GDP, the highest among the EU countries (Gemany 1.50, UK 1.20) or even USA (4.03) and yet much less than its potential intruder, Turkey (5.30) a country seven times bigger than Greece.

In this volatile game of geopolitics, the bosses of Euro”family” have always been playing the major role in cultivating and manipulating an unguaranteed stability in the area, thus creating market conditions for their influential military industries to flourish. German defence corporations in particular have been major contractors with the Greek (and Turkish) army for more than two decades. . And as it proves, the rules of fair play supposed to be followed and protected by the elected European leaders at least within the “family”, is simply another big joke.
One of countless scandals in Greece involves millions of euros smuggled under the table by Siemens and siphoned to the leading Greek political parties of New Democracy and PASOK as “commissions” or direct bribes for wining certain contracts worth billions. The key person (a Siemens top executive of Greek origin and German citizenship) involved in the plot, escaped arrest and trial in Greece and currently shelters in Germany where he is protected by German law.
Citations in the sucoF image refer to some of the German businesses in Greece during the recent years. Among them military ships and submarines, tanks and missiles as well as the notorious C4i surveillance system supposed for Olympics’ security, a system that never existed in reality as anything else but a huge fraud; and last but not least, OTE, the Greek national organization of telecommunications modernized by German companies funded with Greek funds only to be bought (30% stake) soon after, by another German company through obscure procedures.
All these sum up to hundreds of billions of euros and, under other circumstances, could have been more than enough to balance the Greek budget deficit and even drastically alleviate the external debt.
One thing is for sure, those billions were added to the profits of German industrialists, bankers and intermediaries, Greek corrupted politicians and civil servants. They also created a lifelong mega-debt per capita and a socioeconomic turmoil for the man in the street.
But the man in the street has also his own share of responsibility for the crisis through the appointments made with political or nepotist criteria in the public sector. Thousands of low or zero productivity posts were awarded to certain people with provocatively high wages. The total wreck was complete with wide spread systematic tax evasions while consumption expenses fueled by high risk loans and backed by arrogant socioeconomic attitudes were proudly sported out as a normal and hardly quitting -even today- way of living.
No doubt Greece is a deeply corrupted country that deserves it’s crisis. However it always take two to tango, the poor and the rich, the bribed and the briber. And it simply takes a reversed focus on the issue for the corrupt motives and the real suc of to be revealed on either sides…
