Karygiannis letter against Coptic Christian persecution in Egypt signed by 40 Liberal MPs
OTTAWA – The Honourable Jim Karygiannis, Member of
Parliament for Scarborough-Agincourt, has sent a letter, signed by forty
Liberal Members of Parliament, with respect to religious intolerance in
Egypt, to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lawrence Cannon.
“In recent weeks, Coptic Christians have been attacked
and had their homes and churches burned.” said Mr. Karygiannis. “I have
written to the Minister and heard nothing. He hasn’t even issued a
statement condemning these events.”
Article 46, of the Constitution of the Arab Republic of Egypt states that:
“The State shall guarantee the freedom of belief and the freedom of practising religious rights.”
The letter calls on the Foreign Affairs Minister to
either call in the Egyptian Ambassador or send a Diplomatic Note to
express the outrage of the Canadian Government and all Canadians.
“I want to thank all the Members of Parliament who
signed the letter.” Mr. Karygiannis commented. “They are showing their
solidarity with the religious minorities in Egypt, especially the Coptic
